Introduction

Manilsa Temple is situated on the mid-peak of Seogeosan Mountain (579m). Although its exact founding year remains unknown, it is speculated to have been erected in the Goryeo Dynasty, based on the sculpting techniques applied to the stone pagodas, rock-carved Buddha and gilt bronze stone Buddha statues as well as the records of Donggukyeojiseungnam. As for the Daeungjeon Hall, the sermon hall erected in 1876 (13th year of King Gojong’s reign over Joseon) was demolished in 1970, and a new hall was built with 4 rooms in the front and 2 rooms on the sides with gambrel roof. Enshrined in the hall is Cheonan Seonggeosan Cheonseongsamyeong Gilt Bronze Seated Statue of Buddha, designated as Tangible Cultural Property No. 168. Manilsa Temple is a beautiful Buddhist temple, surrounded by exquisite natural scenery and landscape including Seongeosan Valley and Cheonheung Reservoir.
